Our new love, Shangri-La, is hosting this month’s Second Sunday Sock Hop this Sunday evening, Feb 8th. Too much to decide from this evening between the Downtown Alamo’s The Rock-Afire Explosion Super Star Pizza Party (thanks, Cati!) and the L Word (thanks Tivo!).

Last Day Austin Chronicle Music Poll!

29 01 2009

Tomorrow is the last day to celebrate democracy in Austin! Ok Chicken Little, chill the eff out!

Just a quick reminder that you have 24 hours left to submit your last dying words to vote for the best bands of Austin! Basically, if you were good when we first told you about this special day in Chroniclelandia and already voted, we don’t suggest even thinking about doing it again. We’re pretty sure the Chron will come and hunt you and your IP address down. With a sawed off shot gun. And my pink taser.

austin-music-pollMusic Poll 2008-2009

After 27 years, you know the drill: This is your chance to duct-tape the critics’ mouths shut and speak up about Austin music. Not sure whom to vote for? Turn on the radio, drop by the local record store, or head to the clubs. Your favorite band is probably playing.

Rules:
-Entries must be received by Friday, January 30, 2009.
-Absolutely no more than one (1) ballot to a person.
-Ballot stuffers will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. This could get ugly, so don’t do it.
-We will need all of your contact information to accept your web entry.
-Please read our Privacy Policy.

Ballots available in current issues of The Chronicle or at www.austinchronicle.com/musicpoll

Happy Voting!

Oh Bai, Prezdent Bush

16 01 2009

We will miss those little beedy eyes and those AM-fifth-of-vodka malapropisms and eggcorns (yes, wiki that shiz)… What better way to celebrate (ahem, send off our President) than with hundreds of your liberal-Austin-oasis friends?

Bush Retirement Party

Tuesday, January 20, 2009, 7:00 PM at Antone’s at 213 w 5th st.

We are likely too broke (thanks for a great eight years!) to pay the $20/25 ticket price (and you know, we’re saving for a fancy Taco Bell V-day), but Do512.com is giving away three free tickets!

Have fun, kids!

Voting Obsessed and Possessed: The Dicks

16 01 2009

Basically we hate everyone who fills out those MySpace surveys all day. Wow, we went to middle school together. Let’s be friends so I can see your fugrats and read your crappy blog devoted to your second divorce. Oh wait, wtf, why do I have 20 zillion survey bulletins from you all of a sudden? OMG!!!! Delete from friends. The End.

Whew.

Yes, we may hate surveys. But, wow, give us a poll and we turn into those survey fiends and not only want to tell you about the last person we kissed, texted, and boned, but now we want to tell you how you should vote too!

So, today we take the opportunity to encourage democracy and tell you about our love and absolute first choice for the Austin Music Poll’s Hall of Fame. We present to you, The Dicks!

In a very scientific (and perhaps sophomoric) manner, we remembered how funny the word “dick” actually is (as in “bowl of dicks” “eat a dick” “sweet sweet dicking”) and then totally went with them. But then we read about their music and we fell even more in love with The Dicks! Sorta-pun, intended.

thedicksThe Dicks: In their rage-driven, nonpolemical stance against racism, homophobia, and police brutality, the Dicks embodied the most extreme confrontational and liberating aspects of Austin’s punk rock aesthetic. Although the roar of their oft-covered 1980 debut single, “Hate the Police,” anticipated the hardcore explosion, vocalist Gary Floyd’s larynx-shredding expressionism had clear roots in the blues of the mean Old South. Following 1983’s Kill From the Heart, Floyd moved to San Francisco and reformed the Dicks with new members. Guitarist Glen Taylor passed away in 1997, but the surviving Austin-era Dicks reunited in 2004 without losing a drop of piss and vinegar. – Greg Beets

Racism, homophobia and the police are all anathema to us. We’re sold on The Dicks. Our vote secured, we still decide to Google them. Lo and behold, they have an unofficial MySpace Fan Page. Sometimes we pray at night that one we’ll have one too, so we are over the moon. Check this out!

The Dicks always gigged with Big Boys, and Austin Hardcore evolved around those two groups. The Dicks were led by Gary Floyd, a fat gay singer dressed in weird drag, who’d take enema bags filled with liver and condoms filled with mayonnaise and hurl them at the crowd. The classic Dicks – frontman Floyd with mean-ass members bassist Glen Taylor, guitarist Buxf Parrot, drummer Pat Deason – started as a “poster band”, the posters promoting imaginary shows at ficticious [sic] clubs, saying things like “First ten people with guns drink for free.”

Hardcore, mayo, and DRAG??!??!?! It’s just too much to handle. What can we say? WE LOVE THE DICKS!

Ok, So We Kinda Miss Voting

13 01 2009

Ok, so we admit we kinda miss all the voting hype with you-know-who having won and all… Here is your chance to live the dream again! The Austin Chronicle’s Best of Music Poll is upon us again!

Um, ya, and just so you know, we would NEVER EVER engage in any shady ballot stuffing! But, we’re all for taking bribes for our votes for Austin’s best bands. Ok, maybe just me. Whatcha got? 🙂

MLK Celebration on Monday, Jan 19

10 01 2009

Hopefully you have got the day off on Monday to help celebrate the life and work of Dr. King. As in past years, there will a march and festival this year that will end on the east side’s Huston-Tillotson campus. It begins at 9 AM at the MLK statue on UT’s campus so no sleeping in! Ok, ok, the march starts at 10 am at the Capitol so you squeeze in a full hour of beauty sleep (not that you need it, sexyface).

To celebrate the national MLK day holiday, the Heritage Council is sponsoring the 2009 Community March. The purpose of this 16th annual Community March is to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. The 2009 MLK Community March kicks off at 9 a.m. with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus. We will then march to the Capitol for a brief program. Thereafter, we will march to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, where exciting activities are planned.

In previous years, the march has drawn up to an estimated 15,000 people and we are anticipating even more individuals to unite for this special occasion in January 2009. All businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march with us and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.

The 2009 celebration festivities, as well as the free parking locations, are along Capital Metro’s bus routes. A change in federal regulations in 2008 prevents Capital Metro from providing event shuttle service to/from the MLK festivities.

We love that CapMetro is still able to shuttle drunk people allll around town (late night bus booty calls, heyyyy), but not to any MLK activities. Here is a fabulous map for all of the activities. We’re hoping that the weather is much, much better than in 2008 (freezing, rainy, blustery) and 2007 (unprecendented, yet pretty magnificent, ice storm).

And, true to our nature, we’re also praying hard that there will be a funnel cake with our names on it at the end of this parade.

East Austin Weather Report

9 01 2009

sunnyJust in case you’ve been locked in a cube all day… or a dungeon…  or a… whatever, it’s freaking GORGEOUS outside!

Yesterday we sat outside and probably singlehandedly told that Seasonal Affective Disorder to go eff itself. Sorry, kiddos, for the language, but those winter blues were really getting to us.

We just drove past Clementine’s Birthday Party and saw they have the bands set up on their outside deck. Get your little springtime lawn chair and set up shop and get your afternoon drink on…

Tomorrow we’re hoping to ride one of those giant swans around Lady Bird Lake (have you done this before–we need to know–is it as awesome as it seems?) and put some air in our tires to enjoy the sunshine.

We realized we forgot to remind you to check out Vida Loca Vintage in our fabulous Weekend Round-Up.

No go outside! Since we are working (blechhhh) late tonight, we command you!

Weekend Round-Up!

9 01 2009

shitty-over-the-weekend

Hot damn there’s a lot to do this weekend! So we’re going to do our best to remember it all for you here!

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Clementine Coffee Bar turns three! (and parties all day like they’re going on 21!) It’s the second to last night of Austin Free Week (double pouts all around) so get it while you can! Yelpers get nekkid in public… Ok, actually it’s Austin’s Yelp Annual Kick-Off Party!

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Star of Texas Tattoo Revival (where basically you can look much, much cooler than the rest of us)… Beerland hosts a fabulous send off party to Austin Free Week too because it’s the last night of Austin Free Week (damn it all to hell)… And, party at The Music Gym!

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

WE WANT IT!!! It’s sexytime for the Second Sunday Sock Hop at Shangri-La! Break out the dancing shoes, sweetpea! Last but certainly not least, please keep your peepers peeled for that little red-nosed bebe whom we’ve thought about all week, Beans.

Happy Weekend to you!

Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival

7 01 2009

Clearly where my sugar dumpling should get the Asian characters (literal translation: “Spring Break 98”) on his back covered: the Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival!

We missed last year’s show but heard several thousand radio ads from its laser tattoo removal sponsor and were quite intrigued by the openness of the regret-uation. Perhaps you’re already having second thoughts about that recent eggnog hangover and surprise from Santa?

I must warn you though, their website says there will be belly dancing at the show. Yes, that kind of belly dancing. Where the belly, is, actually dancing. Fox trot. Waltz. I am not sure what it is doing, but I do know that I don’t need some skinny Ab-Rollin’ betch up on me when I am trying to stuff my chompers with pita and hummus. Perhaps it’s better in this type of venue than where you’re actually trying to eat (or doing anything food related for that matter), but you will have to let me know how that goes.

Ring, Ring! Hello? It’s Austin Free Week!

6 01 2009

It’s STILL Free Week Austin! Yay! Are you worn out until SXSW now? Nooooo!!

Well, there’s still lots to see! And hear! And shake your babymaker to! (I know people hate that whole ending sentences with prepositions thing, so I apologize for all of you grammatically-correct babymakershakers).

We realized we’ve been holding out on you too. Sorry! Earthbird Music provided a really easy (simple like “The Google” for your parents) cheat sheet with all of the bands/dates/locations and it is here. Who said we never gave you anything? XOXO

Clementine: Oh Bai, Terrible Twos!

5 01 2009

When your friendly east side coffee swinger offers you a beer when you finish your dissertation proposal or ensures you have some soy milk with that big delish chocolate chip cookie, you know you’ve found home. Hence, my undying love for Clementine Coffee Bar.

This is not your libraryesque-quiet-as-a-mouse coffee shop (read: Flightpath’s cadre of “I’ll smash this pie plate right here and cut you down to your neckbone if you pick up that cell phone” back room Flightpathers), this is a really (like, ridiculously) friendly, wonderful music flowing, hopping joint. They even, in a very nice way, told me that when I order coffee with chocolate, it’s actually a “mocha.” Who knew?! Brilliant!

Anyway, Clemmie’s going to be three this week and will be celebrating with some of Austin’s finest (and I do mean F-I-N-E) musicians and some sweet dranks…

We shall see you there!

(p.s. to The Great Nostalgic… are you stalking us?!)

Yay! More! It’s Austin Free Week!

5 01 2009

Next up for Free Week, my lovelies, comes our dear friends, The Authors, playing Club de Ville Wednesday evening at 10 pm. They’re playing with BFF-4evs Corto Maltese and The Great Nostalgic.

Angela, the fabulous red-headed drummer for The Authors will probably laugh when she reads this but a few weeks ago at a bbq at her house, I stuck my big ol’ foot in my mouth talking about my love for her band.

Me to Angela: “Ya, you know how you go and see all of your friend’s bands because it’s the friend-y thing to do. But when I saw your band [The Authors], I was like, ‘Wow! They actually don’t suck! They’re actually really good!'”

To which Angela, munching down on the potato salad for which I had laboured for hours, quickly replied: “Ya, it’s like this potato salad! I was like, ‘Eh, it’s potato salad’ but wow, now that it’s in my mouth, it really doesn’t suck! It’s actually quite good!”

See, aren’t you in love with The Authors now too?

See you Wednesday night!

More! It’s Austin Free Week!

3 01 2009

Essentially we’ve decided to give over our lives to Austin’s Free Week. Tonight–too many great bands to choose from but we’ll likely find ourselves at the Mohawk’s River Boat Gamblers show or the What Made Milwaukee Famous show at Emo’s outside at 8/10 pm tonight. Our lovely friend Jen is visiting and she hearts these Austin boys a great deal. Also excited to see Austinites and my long time MySpace-besties Oh No! Oh My!

We’ve not heard The Pons yet but we do love their pink album art! You can also get your new year paws on The Mercers and The Georgian Company. Doors open at 8 pm and the show starts at 10 PM. Get yo’self an early bird IHOP special downtown and then bring your syrupy head on over.
