Sounds: The Mountain Goats at Antone’s

31 10 2008

The Mountain Goats will be making a stop this Saturday at Antone’s to promote their latest album Heretic Pride. The album was actually released this last February and received an 8.0 on the I’m too cool for school and you will listen to whatever the hell I tell you to listen too coolness meter on Pitchfork Media. I must be honest, I am a luke warm fan, well at least I was until I took a listen to Heretic Pride. You see, other than a few stand out tracks like No Children, some of their songs seem to blend into one long song, they all sounded the same to me. I know, I know… give it a chance right? Well I didn’t but the lovely significant other was a fan and so I downloaded the new album and loved it. It seems like they decided to speed things up a bit. At least that’s how I felt. But never mind that. Take a listen and tell us what you think. If you are so inclined to this Saturday, you can catch them at with Kaki King at Antone’s. For your viewing pleasure, I will submit to you, No Children from the Tallahassee album thanks to Youtube.

Hallow’s Eve at the Old Legation

31 10 2008

The word on the street is there will be a viewing of Young Frankenstein tonight at the Old Legation. For those of you who don’t know what it is (like us until a few minutes ago), the French Legation that was built in 1840 was once the home of the charg d’ affaires. Huh? Exactly! It was the home of the people who represented the French government in Texas while Texas was still a republic. Now it has become the property of the State of Texas and is available for tours during normal business hours. But for tonight, it’s all about ghouls and goblins! See below for more information.

Ghost tours 1-4pm at regular admission rates, community event 6-9pm FREE, 9pm movie $5/adult.

Austin’s oldest home will open its iron gates to visitors (living or otherwise) for a special evening of music, stories, games, and fun. Ghost tours of the home will be offered at regular admission prices at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, and 4:00pm. The museum will then host an exciting community gathering from 6:00-9:00pm filled with music by Austin’s own David Lutes (www.plumtucker.net), stories of neighborhood ghosts, bobbing for apples, candlelight viewings of the historic home and Victorian mourning practices, and other FREE family fun. Grown-ups and young adults are invited to stay and watch an outdoor movie at 9:00pm in front of the historic home for just $5. Picnics are welcome!

Please call 512/472-8180 for movie title, event details, and information!

31 10 2008

Monster drawings! East Austin’s favorite bookstore will be having a shindig featuring an awesome collection of monster drawings from a ton of artist. There is a lot going on tonight, but don’t commit to just one thing, if at all possible, try to go to as many of our local events and support as many of them as you can, including this one.

Etsy Store: Lazy Little Things

29 10 2008
East Austin resident Lillian G’s Etsy store, Lazy Little Things, is a goldmine for all of you t-shirt collectors. Her designs are funny and unique, and many of her shirts are recycled, too! Gotta love that. We haven’t actually bought any of her wares just yet, but we are excited about the idea of getting a “little thing” in the mail along with our package. She says she is an obsessive collector of all sorts of things, and a purchase from her store comes with the promise of an extra little something she found somewhere. Who else gives you FREE stuff!? Lillian isn’t just a one-trick pony. In addition to t-shirts, she has all sorts of wild postcards for sale, each amazing in their own right. We particularly love her Indefinable Dementia postcard. Let’s support our local artist, guys! Who doesn’t want a T-Rex t-shirt!?

EA: T-shirts and postcards are the name of your game — what drew you to these mediums for your creations?
Lillian: A few years ago, I started making small postcard-sized collages and I got super into it. I became obsessed with the idea of making one a day, and while I was making one a day for myself, I was also making these collages, postcards, and mail gifts for friends. I started making silkscreens around the same time and similarly, began to print shirts for myself as well as gifts for friends.
EA: We love getting things in the mail and have a pretty nice little collection of postcards ourselves. What’s the awesomest thing you’ve received in the mail? Postcard, or otherwise. What is the farthest a postcard has traveled to be with you?
Lillian: It’s hard to say the very best thing the postperson has ever brought me, but a package that really stands out in my mind was one I received about a year ago from my good friend Emily Jo Cureton. She sent a big box full of a ton of surprises, including a collection of the daily New York Times crossword puzzles that she had completed over the past few months, a really great blue and pink striped sweater (which has since become one of my favorite articles of clothing), a bag full of pompoms of a variety of colors and sizes, a Mighty Tiny record player (the world’s tinniest records player!), and some cut outs from drawings she was working on. It was a treat to say the least.
I think the furthest a postcard has travelled to me is from Florence, Italy to my humble abode in Austin. I got it a few weeks ago from my sister who is staying there right now.
EA: Your profile says you collect things. Please elaborate! Keys? Books? People? What’s your largest collection?
Lillian: I collect a lot of things: little things, brightly colored things, tiny plastic toys, nuts and bolts, glass jars, old photographs and slides from other people’s family vacations, pompoms, kid’s science books with lots of pictures, American Heritage books, $1 records, anything related to or looking like a watermelon, neon hats, cigar boxes… I have an incredibly difficult time parting with objects, so I have a house full of bits and pieces, scraps and snips, nicks and nacks, this and that, not to mention odds and ends.
EA: Your t-shirts rock our socks off. Where do you get your ideas for the design? Which is your favorite?
Lillian: Most of the images are based on things I’ve found in books. For example the T-Rex print is based on a picture in a book I have about “the natural history of dinosaurs” and “Mouth Pains” is an enlargement of an image from an old medical text book. Some aren’t from another source, like the bubbles print. That’s from a “bubble drawing” I made and then scanned it and increased the contrast.
I think the “Mouth Pains” shirt is my favorite. I think it looks funny to see a person wearing a shirt with a big head on it, I imagine them with two heads stacked on top of each other and the fake head on the shirt is a lot larger than their actual head. For some reason that seems funny to me. Also I like this shirt because some people, like my mother, are utterly repulsed by it. I just think it is unexpected and funny to see athis picture on a t-shirt.
EA: Do you ever feel sad after you’ve sold something you created? Like, “oh! bye dinosaur t-shirt! I hope you find a good home.” Or is it more like, “yay, now someone else can love you too, dinosaur t-shirt,” or are you more sane then we are and refrain from making emotional attachments to inanimate objects?
Lillian: I connect emotionally to object all the time, maybe that’s why I have such a hard time throwing things away. With the t-shirts, I’m not sad to see them go, I’m happy and flattered that somebody wants to wear it. It makes me feel really good when people are interested in the things I make. Also, the beauty of silkscreening is that I can always make more prints of the images.

EA: Finally, do you feel that East Austin has influenced you and your work in any way? What brought you to this neighborhood in the first place? What’s your favorite East Austin place?

Lillian: Hmmm, I’m not sure about East Austin specifically influencing my work, but living here has been great. I moved to the neighborhood when my friend was about to move out of her amazing house, so she left and I inherited this happy home full of cobwebs and white drapes. I live next to the Oakwood Cemetary, which is perhaps my favorite place on the east side of I-35, either there or my front porch.

Thanks Lillian!

If any of you guys out there know of any East Austinite designers with their wares on Etsy, please let them know that we are looking for more people to talk to. They can e-mail us at eastaustinite@gmail.com

Halloween Suggestion #3: 501 Studios “Rockula”

28 10 2008

This ain’t your redneck brother’s backyard Halloween party. This sounds like the East Side’s big bash. They have, like, promoters and stuff. So if that downtown craziness is your scene, but you feel like keeping the party in the East Austin hood, this sounds like your best bet so far.

501 Studios is hosting a high-energy dance party they have dubbed Rockula (we will reserve judgement on the choice of that particular moniker). Be prepared for video projected creep shows, a handcrafted photo set with photographer Victoria Renard, a costume contest, and music (obvi).

Whisky Bar’s DJ Hannibal Beretta will also be on the premises spinning some tunes. Show Me Tiger! plays at 10:30 and L.A.X. takes over at midnight.

Oh, and apparently they’ve recruited Mmmpanadas to serve up some tasty delights. We love empanadas. Little pockets of heaven.

Here’s the full info from their Myspace page.

Calling All You East Austin Softball Players

28 10 2008

If you haven’t heard about the Austin’s Alternative Softball League, here are a few details. Softball without the sucking part. With that being said, the current season has just come to a conclusion with the Austin Chronicles team winning it all. At this point, they are going to be gearing up for a new season too and we are wanting to get a team of East Austinites together to compete. If any of you are interested in joining the team, give us a shout at eastaustinite@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you guys so we can get started.

Shangri Oh La La

28 10 2008

Remember that bright turquoise building? We stopped by East 6th Street’s newest addition last weekend and got some details on the Shangri-La. First of all, it is pretty awesome, and it’s topped off with a bit of more awesome. It seems like patrons will be going in through the rear entrance near the outdoor patio, and the patio in itself is pretty cool. It’s getting cooler now, but I can see us spending a lot of time out there on pleasant-weather days. The inside wasn’t finished yet, since they aren’t schedule to open until possibly November, but it’s coming along great. My favorite part of the interior has to be the gun art… nothing says welcome to Texas like guns on the wall. On top of a great selection on tap, they will have pool tables and possibly vintage arcade games for all the patrons to enjoy. We are excited about the Shangri-La opening up soon and we will be there for sure on opening day. You can be there, too, if you friend them on Myspace so you can keep up with the progress and find out exactly when they will be open for business.

Gangster’s Paradise: Tomatoes, Herbs, Lemons!

28 10 2008

There’s this big empty lot on East 6th street we drive past regularly.  It’s all overgrown and ugly, and really needs some love and we thought that in New York City, some guerilla gardners would be all over that space. We didn’t know this until about 5 minutes ago, but apparently that’s where the movement sort of began, at least that’s where the term originated. Which got us thinking — this seems like a guerilla gardening kind of town, too. We’ve driven past several little community gardens in our explorations around the city, so we got to googling, and lo and behold! A gang of gardeners in Austin are working on a little garden right here in East Austin! Supposedly there’s a lemon tree and herbs and veggies and all kinds of stuff.

We, personally, are not lucky enough to have a little patch of green to call our own. What we have is a metal balcony that gets direct sunlight for about 12 hours a day, which has quickly killed even the heartiest of plants. Seriously. Even the cactus is hanging on by a thread. We are also not the greenest of thumbs, and the Garden Posse, Austin’s guerilla gardening fairy godmothers, should probably inflict a restraining order against us, lest we quickly undo all of their progress with our mere brown-thumb presence. They are almost done with the East Side garden, it seems, and will be moving on to a yet-to-be-determined spot in South Austin. So if you feel like beautifying some fugly land out there, get in touch with these guys and start getting your hands dirty!

UPDATE: For all of you guys hoping to join the movement, you can meet the Garden Posse tonight at 7:30 at this location on the east side. Thanks to Lindsay for the info, and if you have any questions for the group, feel free to email her. No SPAM… we will hunt you down…they have all the tools to bury you!

Movies of the Week

27 10 2008

We love movies, and better yet, we love FREE movies where eating and drinking is involved. Lucky for us, we have two great shows coming up this week. Our favorite has to be Shaun of the Dead as it’s easily on of the funniest horror flicks out there but they should both make for a great time.

Tuesday at Sustainable Waves: Shaun of the Dead

Art Seen along with Sustainable Waves and I Luv Video present the solar powered Bike-In Film screening of “Shaun of the Dead” plus two short films, “Smashing in Blue” and “Definitely Not Roy”, by Austin’s very own Big Ol’ Tire Fire Tuesday, October 28th at 8pm. Free

Wednesday at Triple Crown Tattoo Parlour: Return of the Living Dead

The Sly Fox Video Club is a Austin-based group of movie fans who get together every week and a half for movies, snacks, drinks, and the occasional random tattoo. We meet at Triple Crown Tattoo Parlour, 1157 Chicon St. (512) 524-1447

Halloween option #2: Party at the Peacock

25 10 2008

We love the peacock. The blue walls, the white chairs, the old-world style — we dig it. If you, too, are a fan, then, for your consideration, may we present Halloween at the Peacock. Not many details, but there’s no cover (yay, more $$ for drinks). DJ  Alan B will be spinning some tunes, and drink specials have been promised.

This sounds like a nice laid back option for those of us who enjoy a costume, a good drink, and maybe a little dancing, but prefer to avoid the obnoxious crowds certain to be whoring it up at other Austin locales this Halloween.

Also, clearly the superior choice for those of you choosing to leave your house dressed like any sort of feathered creature.

Bikes, Prizes and Awesomeness

24 10 2008

One of our fellow East Austinites will be putting together another one of his rockin alleycat races. For those of you that don’t know what it is, it’s basically people racing on their bikes with spikes on the ends of their shoes and attempt to kill as many people as they can before they hit the finish line. All kidding aside, it’s just a race that is really popular in the messenger and fixed gear riding circles. Hit up this wiki link for more info. For now, we just want to put this out there for all of you East Austin bikers who want to show what your made of. East Austin’s own Eastside Pedal Pushers will be one of the many sponsors so you know the prizes will be good ones. If you plan on attending this race make, make sure you dress up… there will be prizes for the best costume.

Like Bikes? Movies? Cheap Clothes?

24 10 2008

If so, get your ass down to Treasure City tonight and get all of your needs taken care of. Got something wrong with your bike? There the Yellowbike project will be there to help you out. Looking for a movie? Then tonight you will be able to catch Maradona tonight while possibly enjoying some popcorn. Music? Yeah, they got that too with DJ Bullet taking care of that. On top of that, you can also get all of your shopping done. Check out this from their newsletter.

Friday Nights at Treasure City…it’s the best time to do your clothes,
housewares, furniture, craft supply, book and other random stuff shopping.
Why? Well, Treasure City’s favorite DJ (DJ Bullet) will be spinning, you can
fix your bike at yellowbike while you’re there, there’s plenty of bike parking,
and you can BYOB to the free movie on the relatively big screen. There *might*
even be fresh popcorn for sale (cheap, of course, like everything else we sell)
and we’re thinking of adding food vendors in the future, so if you are a vendor
that would like to be considered, please get in touch.

Treasure City and Yellow Bike open until 9pm / Movie Start at 9pm

THIS WEEK’S MOVIE: Maradona (2008)

A documentary on the life of Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, directed by
the award-winning Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica.

Another East End Fourth Friday

23 10 2008

Right off of 11th street, you will be able to catch a ton of music, food and general awesomeness. Check it out below.

Halloween at the Scoot Inn you say? Good idea!

22 10 2008

F’in Halloween. So many ugly people in inappropriate costumes. Second only to New Year’s Eve in the pressure to find someplace to party it up. Then make some plans!

YOU: “Make Halloween plans before the actual night of Halloween? But I’m spontaneous! I like to see where the night will take me!”

ME: Don’t be a fool. Without a plan, we both know the night will “take you” no farther then your sofa, where you’ll spend a lonely evening in your Harry Potter costume wondering why no one has awesome parties like they did back in the old days.

YOU: But planning is so hard!

ME: Agreed. So we’ll do this together! We will post things happening on Halloween and you will read about them.

Item #1 for your consideration:

So we all know and love the Scoot Inn (in our case mostly because of the Sock Hop, which is no longer at the Scoot Inn, but we digress). Looks like they are planning some crazy shindig at their place for Halloween. We don’t even really know what all that info on the poster means, but what we do know is it’s close to where we live (imperative on a heavy drinking night), involves bikes, music, and some sort of giant snake. That’s what she said. Ay-OH. Sounds like a party. More later.

Solid Gold Sale!

22 10 2008

So we are lucky (and savvy) enough to be on the Solid Gold e-mail list, and we heard they are having a huge sale to celebrate their birthday! Buy one get one free — WHAT?? That sounds crazy awesome. Supposedly it’s thorugh the end of October. Now, we don’t see anything on their Web site about it, but the e-mail said, so I’m saying, get on down there.

P.S. we also heard they had a break in recently and that makes us sadsies cause they are such nice folks. All the more reason to go over and say hello.

This Weeks Flick at Triple Crown: Spinal Tap

22 10 2008

Same as last week folks. Free booze and eat’s tonight at our favorite tattoo parlour on the East Side… Triple Crown. This time the cult classic This is Spinal Tap will be on the screen and it should be a good one. The film is pretty much a mockumentery focusing on a fictional heavy metal band called Spinal Tap. We honestly have never seen it, but we plan on making this one for sure. This trailer is hilarious.

FOOD! Where!? Over There!

21 10 2008

There really aren’t many options when it comes to getting groceries in our nabe. We have the HEB down on 7th street, but sometimes the produce isn’t as fresh as we would like. At times, the lines are longer than normal and honestly, it’s a little gross. Come on! We aren’t the only ones that feel this way. We have met A LOT of East Austin residents through our blog and whenever this subject comes up, many people admit that they travel west of I-35 and hit up either Whole Foods or the HEB at the Handcock Center.

So tell us, where do you go? Do you feel like there would be room for an organic food store to compete with the 7th street HEB?

Sounds: The Death Set Tuesday at Red 7

20 10 2008

We caught these guys a couple of months back at the Mohawk opening for Matt and Kim and they were definitely memorable. For their entire set, they decided to forgo the stage and set up right in the middle of all the kids rocking their faces off. This time, they will be headlining at Red 7 in front of Best Fwends, Cry Blood Apache and DJ Richard Henry.

Mad House Dash to Emo’s For Girl Talk Monday

20 10 2008

Girl Talk and the whole mashup movement has been around for a while now. It’s been getting so big recently that people are actually putting up tickets for tonight’s Girl Talk show at Emo’s up for sale on Craigslist for $100. If some of you don’t know what a mashup is, it’s basically when you take samples from a bunch of songs, layer them on top of other samples, add some vocals or whatever, and bam… a new song. There is a video below that shows the Pittsburgh artist making a quick mashup of an Elvis Costello track in under five minutes.

If you can’t make the show tonight because you forgot to buy tickets or because you can’t afford $100 for a show like most of us, you can catch Austin’s own Car Stereo Wars at the Beauty Bar on the 25th.

Get Girl Talk’s newest album, Feed The Animals, while naming your price here.

The Peacock Is A-Changin

19 10 2008

We went to The Peacock a couple of weeks ago and we had a blast. Apparently they are changing their night time routine for some reason. Here are the details taken directly from their myspace page.

We’ve been making some small changes at The Peacock that you may have noticed and we have a few more coming up.

“The Cage:” We got rid of that crazy cage thing with curtains that was by the front door. We built it to cut down on noise outside when people came in and out. I don’t know that it ever worked as advertised and we moved the entrance to the side anyway. It looks a lot brighter and more spacious inside now.

Juke Box:  We decided to get a juke box again. Unfortunately, it’s not our cool wall mounted peacock juke box of yesteryear. (We only ever got it to work for a few weeks, anyway.)

This juke box is pretty cool, but a little pricey. I had to pass.

This new juke box is pretty cool. It’s got a hard drive that holds 2,000 songs in a high quality audio format. It’s also connected via the Internet to a database of over 300,000 songs. E-mail us if you have any suggestions for songs to put on the hard drive.

Tap Beer: A lot of people have been asking for something on tap. We’re rearranging the bar so we can get a keg back there. If you only have one tap, you have to make it Lone Star. We are in Texas, after all. We’ll be selling pints and probably pitchers at a great price, all the time.

The Patio:  The city’s rejected our paperwork. Twice. You would think we were building a subdivision in the rainforest with all the requirements at the city. We’re just building two walls and a bathroom, not a high rise.

It looks like we’ll get the city’s approval next week. Then we have to get approval from the Planning Commission. So, when’s the patio coming? November? December?

Cuisine de Cocktail:  It looks like we’ll be saying au revoir to Cuisine de Cocktail. It was fun, but it was also a lot of work with not much return for us or the great folks at Cissi’s.

Kill the DJ:  We’re stopping the DJs on Friday night for the time being. More reason to play the new juke box!

Dracula Tonight at Hot Mama’s

16 10 2008

Hot Mama’s picked one of our favorites to screen tonight at their lovely outdoor patio. Well technically I’ve never actually seen the movie but I read the book and loved it. This will probably be as good a time as any to see it. We thought this would be a good a time to put up some Bram Stoker’s Dracula trivia in case you need it during the double or nothing question on Cash Cab. If you watch the YouTube clip below, this is apparently the first ever teaser trailer for the movie that got pulled because the audience turned out to be chicken shits.

  • Winona Ryder saw the script when it was originally going to be made as a TV movie, directed by Michael Apted. She took the script to Francis Ford Coppola, whom she had not spoken to since withdrawing from The Godfather: Part III (1990) due to exhaustion six months earlier. Coppola agreed to make the film, and Apted stayed on as executive producer.
  • Steve Buscemi was the first choice to play Renfield but turned down.
  • Earnings from the film was enough to save Zoetrope (Francis Ford Coppola’s studio) from bankruptcy after suffering from financial difficulties and liabilities of $27 million over the past 3 years.
  • To keep the budget manageable, Columbia insisted that the film be shot in Los Angeles and not on location.
  • The film’s original teaser trailer (which consists of blood forming the logo on a jagged surface and quick flashes of scenes from the film) was pulled from theaters by Columbia Pictures when patrons complained of it being too intense. This trailer appears on the Criterion edition laserdisc.

Housing: 2507 East 10th Street

14 10 2008

We bought a place when we moved to Austin. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons we moved here. There comes a point when someone feels like they need to have something of their own. Then the economy went to shit and it all turned into a cluster-fuck. So that’s why this house is so attractive. You can either flat out buy it, or rent it for a lower monthly cost. It would have been nice to have a place like this… even if it was for a short period of time. The owner contacted us earlier in the week asking if we could help them find someone to adopt their house. We wish it could be us! But maybe one of you guys might be interested in this awesome place.

A lot of the remodeled homes in East Austin are getting this sort of “Green” aesthetic and we love it. We love the bungalow style homes of yesteryear. They keep their timeless charm and get updated with the the best of what modern home building has to offer. The home is located on 2507 East 10th Street and the asking price is $387,500. That’s a little too rich for our blood, but it’s nice to know that you can have it for the rental price of  $1,750. If you want more info, contact the seller here. What do you guys think? Is this your style? Is this something that you think will fit in with your idea of East Austin?

I originally purchased the home ~18 months ago and just finished restoring it to it’s original 1940’s charm with a modern flair. I am a big fan of East Austin and originally purchased the home to be my residence, but during that time we had our first child and didn’t want to move mom and baby during such a transitional period.  Based on the stories from the neighbors, this house was at one point in time one of the largest, most beautiful homes on the block and had slowly fallen into decay.  We were able to preserve the structure and restore all the original wood including the long leaf pine floors and the amazing shiplap wall that runs the length of the entire house. In addition, we added a secondary bathroom and utilized the height of the house to add a secondary loft/storage space on the second floor perfect of an office or play area. Restoring this house was a labor of love and nothing but the most high-end finish-out was used to restore the home. We feel the remodel does a great job of preserving the look and feel of East Austin while adding a modern flare. I wanted to pass this along to anyone who has interest in either owning or renting  in East Austin.

For the record, we are not getting any kind of money to post this. We just love looking at things we can’t afford. It’s even better since it’s actually in East Austin.

1X2X3: DOS Press Launch at Domy Books Saturday

10 10 2008

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me — I am a book nerd. I collect them, read them, and attempt to write them. One of my favorite things to do before moving to this city was to attend readings. Whether one of my favorite authors, a student in a writing program, or a writer I’ve never heard of before, attending a reading is always interesting and enlightening, and usually inspiring. Since moving to Austin, this has been something sorely lacking in my life. So I was extremely pleased to hear about a launch party/reading for the newest edition of the Dos Press chapbook featuring a promising line-up and happening right here on the East side at Domy Books this Saturday evening. I was all amped up to go, and then, of course, I realized I already have plans for Saturday. Sigh.

But we hope some of you guys will check it out. More details about the three women reading here.
